Endings for new beginnings

I’ve been very quiet of late because I am in the process of leaving London and moving to “the country”.

I finished work. (Last blog post…)

Now I have cleared out my studio.

It’s the end of a lovely time! It is great having a studio, having the space to go and work instead of trying to steal some space in your home. It helps focus your practise, and allowed me to go big! But a word of warning… Big can be difficult to move when it’s time to get going…

I was lucky to get a studio through a charity called ASC, but it’s time to move on, so I am no longer The Artist in 6a….

Next update (and new name…) to hopefully follow in get the week, fingers crossed!

Endings

Another end of term, and another end of contract. This year was a one year maternity cover for an a Art and Design BTEC level 3 tutor.

I think this has been my hardest year teaching. This is been a blend of working in a new environment, personal issues effecting my professional life as my husbands continues to wait for a heart transplant, some of the most difficult students I have ever taught, and some of the sweetest students I have ever taught.

20140710-075309-28389589.jpg
It has made me decide to leave teaching formal education and try making a living from my own work. It has helped me be confident in myself, my skills, and my professionalism.

20140710-075308-28388917.jpg
This year I have learnt to say no, understand when I need to stop, give myself a break. Amazingly if you do that, then you have more energy, focus and resolve to get things that need to be done competed, and those that aren’t important you can identify, and let go.

Today my mantras are:
Go out and live it,
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes,
Try, try and try again but…
Know when something is wrong and chose to fix it or leave it behind
Make time to sit with friends and loved one and share a meal

20140710-075310-28390673.jpg
I thank all those that did this year’s journey with me, and wish them luck, happiness and health for the future.

Taking time

Today I went to the Marina Abramović at The Serpentine Gallery.

I was not sure what to expect, what I got was more … It is generous, it is time, it is being in a moment, there is something about not judging, it made me question the idea of asking permission, being given permission, self confidence, and trust of others.

You have to experience it for yourself, it’s free, all you have to do is give some time. Even the queue was interesting (and not that long!)

20140614-190545-68745368.jpg

“In a unique work created for the Serpentine, the internationally acclaimed artist Marina Abramović will perform in the Gallery for the duration of her exhibition: 10am to 6pm, 6 days a week. Creating the simplest of environments in the Gallery spaces, Abramović’s only materials will be herself, the audience and a selection of props that she may or may not use. On arrival, visitors will both literally and metaphorically leave their baggage behind in order to enter the exhibition: bags, jackets, electronic equipment, watches and cameras may not accompany them.
The public will become the performing body, participating in the delivery of an unprecedented moment in the history of performance art.
Marina Abramović is a pioneer of performance as an art form, using her own body as subject and object, she has pushed the physical and mental limits of her being. This is the first major performance by Abramović since her monumental piece The Artist is Present, at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 2010, in which visitors were invited to sit in silence opposite the artist and gaze into her eyes for an unspecified amount of time. Abramović performed this work every day for three months.
The pared-down nature of this exhibition corresponds to Abramovic´’s interest in the historically well established relationship between art and ‘nothingness’; visual artists including Robert Barry, John Cage, Mary Ellen Carroll, Robert Irwin, Yves Klein, Gustav Metzger and Yoko Ono (to name only a very few) have all explored the notion of material absence within their practice. The idea ofemptiness – of minimalism, reduction and simplicity – plays an intrinsic role in Abramovic´ ’s own work, and has increasingly led to ‘more and more of less and less’, a longstanding aim that she recorded in her Artist’s Life manifesto of 2009. It is this journey towards immateriality that has led her to this unique moment in her work, where she will commit to an unscripted and improvised performance in the gallery space.
In the early 1970s, as a young artist in Belgrade, Abramović began exploring the relationship between artist and audience. Since 1978 she has conducted a series of workshops with art students, using a series of simple exercises to increase physical and mental awareness. Over the course of her career, Abramović has continued to develop these workshops, expanding their scope to reach a general public, through the Marina Abramović Institute.”

Accidental marks 1

The shadow piercing through the slits on either sided of the blind, hitting the corner of the wardrobe to form a grey, angular light painting.
