The Arts School Newsletter – October

The Arts School online courses drawing and painting

Hello.

Welcome to The Arts School’s October newsletter.

I hope you are all well and exploring Autumn’s glorious colours!

I hope you managed to catch some of the inspiring artists LIVE interviews with Pure 360, if you didn’t you can catch up on the website.

The first online course is up and running. The upside of online courses is you can work around your other commitments. The students are finding it very easy to follow and producing some great results. The next course starts on November 2nd 2020. Spaces are limited so book early!

I am exploring creating an online course for children, let me know if you are interested.

Thank you for your continued support and hope to see you soon.

Art classes – online and in the real

I am running one to one and online art classes due to the current situation and loving the benefits that the different types of classes can have.

The online course I have written allows you to work in your own time, wherever you are. That means I have people from other countries, and a more diverse group because it can work around your own lifestyles. I have had people drawing a beach in Mexico, and from the top of the South Downs.

One to one sessions, either in the same room (socially distant and wearing masks) or via video call, allows you to address specific issues you are having.

Get in touch to find out about the courses I offer!

What do you think?

The great part of an open studio is hearing people’s comments, talking to people, the conversation. So how do we replicate that virtually?

I am asking… I don’t have an answer. Do you?

Work ranges from £2 for gift cards to £300. See individual prices for paintings. Limited editions prints cost £55. Contact me for P&P.

How do you charge for your art?

I often get asked how to charge for artwork. I have a simple formula:

materials (canvas, paints, etc) + time @ £50 per hour + £10 per artwork for studio costs (my studio, advertising etc) + additional fees (gallery or commission fees) = price

A long time ago someone told me that if you feel that you have charged reasonably, honestly, and given value for money for your skills and expertise then you are charging correctly. other advise, cheaper doesn’t necessarily mean it will sell, people will undervalue you if you undervalue yourself.

©️Sophie Douglas – thanks for your time

Studio sales – virtually

One of the things I do when I open my studio is a sale of old work and cards. This is a great way to clear space for new, and allow people to support me if they are not in a position to pay (more on how I charge in another post)

For South East Open Studios I am selling some canvas cards that have my old website, as well as some A4 sketches.

Sale gift cards £2 plus P&P
A4 sketches, please see the studio sale page for details.

©️sophie Douglas – please don’t steal my livelihood but do share and give me the credit! 🥰

This is me!

For South East Open Studios instead of cancelling it went Virtual, and we, the artists, have made videos to introduce ourselves.

Here is the link to mine – welcome to my studio!

SEOS – June 5th

I am getting ready for my first South East Open studios, not quite what I had planned as it’s virtual, but the reason was to get me to create more, and get my work out there.

June 5th – 22nd here on my website, and on Facebook and Instagram!

Still Life – Facebook Lives- join me!

This week it is “bowl of fruit and veg” theme. Love it for the colours, exploring shapes and the challenges of perspective.

Also love when I ask the company that delivered our fruit and veg (the wonderful River Mead Nursery) for something interesting to draw and they drop of a thistle artichoke!

Join me on Facebook Live each day this week at 10am and 7pm (GMT) @theartsschoolinfo
