The Giant Blue Farmhouse Cockerel – what do you think?

“The new artwork for the Fourth Plinth in London’s Trafalgar Square, a bright blue cockerel symbolising regeneration and strength, has been unveiled.

Titled Hahn/Cock, the 4.72m high piece is by German artist Katharina Fritsch and will be on display for 18 months.”

I have made it to see the fourth plinth! It’s big, it’s blue, it’s fun! There is something joyful about it, shocking, but not in a crude or unpleasant way. I am not sure I feel regeneration, but I get strength through the vibrancy of the tone, size, and energy.

What do you think?

Goodwood Sculpture Park

(Goodwood) Cass sculpture park, for those that have never been, is one of the most amazing spaces I have had the honour of visiting. Set in the beautiful woodlands near Goodwood race tracks, Chichester, and the coast, the sculpture Park shows a diverse range of work, different styles, materials, genres, it is wonderful! There is something for everyone, and if you don’t believe me ask my mother… She likes traditional work, I like modern, we both like work that is interesting, different, and takes skill. Please check out their website, and more posts will follow with greater details of some of my favourite pieces.

What the gallery has to say:
“THE FOUNDATION HAS COMMISSIONED OVER 400 CONTEMPORARY SCULPTURES IN THE PAST 20 YEARS. ALL HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE FOR SALE THROUGH THE FOUNDATION, WITH PROCEEDS GOING DIRECTLY TO THE ARTIST.

Cass Sculpture Foundation is an independent commissioning body dedicated to commissioning new work from emerging and established artists. It was developed as a charitable foundation in 1992 by Wilfred and Jeannette Cass.

The Foundation’s 26 acre grounds are home to an ever-changing display of 80 monumental sculptures, all of which are available for sale with the proceeds going directly to artists.

By combining the best of philanthropic and commercial commissioning models, we are able to continually commission and show new sculpture. To date the Foundation has helped produce over 400 works.”

Moon Jar

Today I came upon TheKorean Cultural Centre in London. They are currently running a free ceramics exhibition based on ‘Moon Jars’. The Exhibition showcases some beautiful work of four leading UK potters and a Korean artist; Adam Buick, Jack Doherty, Akiko Hirai, Gareth Mason and Yee Sookyung. I can understand the interest in the moon jar as inspiration. The works have an inherent beauty in the form and colours.

“The exhibition explores a contemporary response to the Moon Jar and its symbolic position in Britain today. The artists have each been invited to present their work alongside the historic vessel, re-contextualising it through their individual ceramics practice.”

20130805-192745.jpgYee Soukyung- originally, the ceramic masters were trying to make perfect works of art. But what I’m trying to do is to literally ‘translate’ the work by collecting pieces of broken vases and mending their ‘wounds’. A brown ceramic piece finds another piece and thy rely on each other. the crack, which symbolises the wound, is emphasised by the gold.”</em<br/<br/20130805-192749.jpg

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Moon jar is a type of traditional Korean white porcelain which was made during the late 17th through 18th century, the late period of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). The name comes from its shape and milky color of the glaze to remind of full moon. It has inspired many artists such as Kim Whanki and Bernard Leach

Save the skate park

Just incase anyone wasn’t aware, there are plans to get rid of the skate park on Southbank. I feel it is part of Southbank and would be so sad to get rid of it for more commercial spaces. There is already the full range of chain eateries, London is full of shops, we don’t need any more there, what we need is a space to watch boys and girls of all ages do tricks on their skateboards because we can, and it’s cool. It is a fantastic place to take photographs incase anyone hasn’t been there!

David Bowie at the V and A

Today I finally made it to the “David Bowie Is” exhibition at the V and A.
“23 March – 11 August 2013. The V&A has been given unprecedented access to the David Bowie Archive to curate the first international retrospective of the extraordinary career of David Bowie. David Bowie is features more than 300 objects that include handwritten lyrics, original costumes, fashion, photography, film, music videos, set designs and Bowie’s own instruments.”

I have always liked his films, and music, but never really been a crazy fan of anyone, it’s just not my nature. I walk away from this exhibition with a new found respect for this man. He is talented and diverse in what he does, he writes, he plays and he performs, he acts, he dresses, he reinterprets. What do we label him as? He is a singer, songwriter, musician, actor, artist, model, he is a muse to photographers, artists, fashion designers, and graphic designers. I get a sense of someone that understands the space he is in, looks at the world, and picks bits to focus on and create. He seems to embody the contemporary concept of what an “icon” is. The exhibition makes me see a man with a vibrant sense of humour, whom is very serious about what he does. I feel inspired to not stick to one thing, like I feel so many artists do, but to keep working in many different ways, why not be jack of all trades, and master of a few of them as well?

Th bit I found hard was the headset. I have never experienced this technology before, the sound systems registers where you are in the exhibition and plays the appropriate music or recording. unfortunately I really didn’t enjoy it, my issues were:
1)The sound went in and out, but i couldn’t work out why. With such a popular exhibition it was hard to get near to the work, and then the sound would come in, but then you move out the way of someone and it went again.
2)Some parts of the exhibition had their own sound and it made it very confusing to what i was listening to.
3) I don’t like having to listen to the recording and not being allowed to go round without it. I know I could just take it off, but I prefer the audience to be able to make a choice.
I love technology being challenged, but I think it has more work before it is successful.

Walking through Hyde Park on a rainy day.

Whenever I walk through a London Park I am reminded how lucky we are to have so much nature and beauty in a city. I always feel that it is a lucky gift to see a Heron, I don’t know why I think that, but I like the idea so am going to keep it. Even in the rain it is a beautiful place!
